Are you being mindful?

Mindfulness is a practice that trains your brain to be more efficient, less distractible, better integrated and less stressed. It sounds unbelievable but by incorporating the practice of mindfulness, or being present in the moment, into your daily routine you will be on your way to a more relaxed, healthier state of mind.

Here are five simple tips on how to be more mindful in your daily life.

  • Be mindful in the morning
Starting off your day with being mindful it will have a calming effect on your nervous system and increases the likelihood of you having mindful moments throughout the rest of your day.
  • Avoid going through the motions
As an introduction to mindfulness into your everyday life, try to bring awareness into the daily activities you would normally do on autopilot. For example, pay more attention when brushing your teeth or eating breakfast and how your senses feel when completing these tasks. By becoming more engaged with all activities in your life a renewed sense of motivated will follow.
  • Keep it short
Rather than trying to have a marathon session of mindfulness, your brain will respond better to short bursts.
  • Listen to your body while you wait
Although having to wait around can seem like a waste of time in our busy lives, it presents the perfect opportunity to practice mindfulness and listen to your body. Bring attention to your breath, focusing on its flow in and out of your body. No matter how frustrated you may feel by having to wait, focusing on listening to your body will bring a sense of calm instead.
  • Cultivate your mindfulness
Meditation is the best way to cultivate mindfulness in your everyday life. By practising meditation, you will become more aware of your mental state and learn to acknowledge and accept your feelings and thoughts it will start to become second nature for you.

Although these tips are simple, the benefits they can have on your state of mind can be tremendous. Try making small changes now to see for yourself.
